Australian Motorcycle Museum, Haigslea.

A good number of Wild Geese arrived at the Eumundi P.O. in time for a nice early start in perfect weather. We rode down to Forest Glen to pick up the southern contingent and then swung out along the Peachester road from Beerwah, picking up Brendan at Peachester. A very straight forward and easy ride down through Kilcoy and Somerset Dam with some entertaining Harley overtaking along the way and then down the eastern side of Lake Wivenhoe through Fernvale to the museum at Haigslea.

The swap meet at the museum was packing up as we arrived and some of our mob missed out on the food! Tummy rumbles for some eh? Some of us ventured into the museum to view the collection of very nice and unusual motorcycles from all eras. It is always very interesting to listen to the comments of folk wandering around these places. "I had one of those" & "I rode around Australia on one of those back in '68!", etc. Everything from AJS to Zundapp with quite a few VERY juicy ones as well thrown in for good measure. The underfed members were soon gnawing on their twistgrips, so we then headed back up to Fernvale for a hearty meal for those that were near starvation or a refreshing drink on this very hot day for the parched members.

The time to leave arrived and we mounted our beasts again and headed back up the Lake Wivenhoe road retracing our steps to the north. We noticed quite a lot of light flashing, hand waving and throat cutting motions being made by oncoming traffic, not to mention the flashing blue light on the top of the Highway Patrol car going the other way and two ambulances to boot. It was obvious that something was up ahead. We managed to get quite a long way up the side of the lake to Sandy Creek (almost to Somerset Dam actually!!) when we came around a corner and there was a police van across the road A really truly roadblock!! It seems that just ahead on the bridge over the creek was the site of a nasty fatal accident and the whole road was closed for about 2 hours prior to investigation! Not even a skinny little motorcycle was allowed through. So, we could go all the way back around the bottom of the Lake and up through Esk or back to the Mt. Glorious Road. A unanimous vote for the Mt Glorious Rd. was no surprise and so that was the way home with surprisingly little traffic for a Sunday. Lovely shaded bend swinging for kilometer after kilometer.

From Samford, we headed north up the Mt. Mee Rod. until the right turn down the gloriously twisty little Campbells Pocket Road to Wamuran on the D'Aguilar Hwy. Big grins at the bottom North from Wamuran to the Old Gympie Road and back onto the Steve Irwin Way and home.

My tally for the day - 495 klms & nearly six hours riding time. A very good day in great company. Route taken is shown here

Steves Beast

First registered in 2002, and acquired by me in January 2012 with 88,000km on the clock. Here are a couple of photos just after buying the bike:

The BeaST is one of the first of the 1300's and has a manually adjusted windscreen, shown above in one of its two available positions. I found this screen height a bit irritating as the top of the screen was right on my line of sight so I have experimented with the mountings and currently ride with the screen mounts inverted, which lowers the screen a bit. I have also adjusted things so that the screen angle better follows the lines of the bike and gives cleaner airflow. This is working well for now, although I find the wind noise a bit excessive.

Those who know me from the days of The Gizmo G S With Wind Deflectors will not be surprised to hear that I ordered an electric screen kit from the UK and fitted it at the beginning of February. Screen go up, screen go down.... (and repeat indefinitely).

I had a throttle lock on my last two KTM's and I missed it on the beaST, so I promptly fixed that problem with a home made lock which works by jamming the rubber grip against the twistgrip body - I leave it to you to spot the cleaning brush from a set of electric clippers in the photos below.

The Great Annual Haigslea Swap Meet

Australian Motorcycle Museum, Butlers Road, Haigslea,

Located 17km west of Ipswich on the Warrego Highway. This is always a popular ride. (Possibly down through Mt. Mee/Mt. Glorious roads and return through Somerset Dam.) Food is available in the kiosk and the museum is open as well.

Next planned visit: Any Sunday 5th Feb 2012 7.30AM for an 8AM departure from Eumundi Post Office.

KTM 950 Adventure

Prior to the ST1300, for a considerable few years, my only bike was the KTM 950 Adventure. The KTM replaced a previous pair of bikes, a Yamaha XJR 1300 and BMW R1150GS. The KTM was a more capable off-road bike than my old GS (at least for my level of riding skill), had similar power to the XJR, and would basically take me anywhere I wanted to go. It was particularly well suited to longer distance road/trail rides, which was probably my main reason for buying the bike.

I kept up for some time a K T M 950Info page to keep track of tyre choices, suppliers etc.

A week later, the KTM gets baptised - now fitted with crash bars, just in case.

So I thought to myself, the KTM is a big heavy bike, maybe it's time for something a bit nimbler. After a test ride or two on various machines, this is what I came up with:

OK, so I may have gone a bit astray. I ended up with a 286kg behemoth of an old fart's touring machine. But after a short test ride she who must sometimes be obeyed gave it the pillion seal of approval and I was actually quite taken with the beaST myself. Sunstate were reasonably negotiable on the price and the bike seemed to be in great condition for a 2002, 88,000km bike, so the deal was done.

Picked the bike up Tuesday, had the KTM sold and delivered Wednesday. No point in hanging around...
