News On Bumble Goose
To let One & All know our Dear Mate, Mick Murphy, has had a fall off his pushie & fractured a hip quite badly. It seems terribly unfair considering that Mick had just recently finished a gruelling ride from Rockie to Brisbane for Bike-4-Burns Ride.
Received this evening from Ena: "Hi Rob huge apologies Mick and I now unable to attend the party. Mick is in Noosa hospital having fallen from his cycle this morning. He has a complicated break of the hip and will be moved to Brisbane PA tomorrow for surgery. After doing the Charity Ride and now just a short ride to home from his training this morning, was travelling with a small group chatting and travelling slowly his front wheel went from under him - it may have been a wet leaf or something! He is being cared for extremely well in Noosa and is now in traction and feeling a little more comfortable. It will be a long haul but he will get there already asking for a new helmet. So could I ask you for your prayers for his recovery. A gentle giant that he is. I will keep you informed. Bye for now God bless. Ena"
All The Wild Geese unite in sending our best Wishes, Caring Thoughts & Prayers to Mick for a speedy recovery. Updates on Mick's progress will be posted from time to time. If you do not have Mick's address and wish to pass on an email message, send it to email and it will be done.
Saturday 14 June: Mick is still in Noosa Hospital awaiting a slot at the PA for work by the Bone Man.
Wednesday 18 June: It seems that Mick will be remaining at Noosa Hospital where he will be in traction for about 6 weeks after having a pin inserted into his leg above the knee. (Ouch!
!) At least he is closer to family & friends there so visitors are welcome. (Exotic gifts are good. Rob)
Ena relates some of Mick's new experiences with bed pans
UPDATES:
Friday 20 June: Story goes that water ballast for the traction was to be 2 kgs. With a misprint or mis read, there were efforts to put 20kgs on the end of his leg OMG
. Stubborn as is Mick this was soon sorted out with a call to the Doc & a more realistic 2kgs was agreed on. (It would have been a sight one leg twice as long as the other one). Nevertheless, Mick is in good spirits and literally itching to get out.
Tuesday 22 July: Good news tonight from Mick's doctor - an x-ray taken today shows healing taking place so next week Mick will have the pins removed, after 2 days he will be allowed in the hydro pool and on the exercise cycle
(yahoo) and then learning to walk again! Sounds good to me. Mick was on
a real high tonight. Ena

Wednesday 30 July: Mick has made a vast improvement, pin came out Monday evening, now today he is hopping on crutches, been on the exercise cycle today.
When the sight of the pins heal he will be able to use the hydro pool.
He is looking good. In real clothes now. No night shirts. Stairs to come.
Bye for now, Ena XX
Thursday 31 July: Hi, Finally some good news for Mick. He had the pin removed last Monday from his lower leg and he is no longer in traction. He has had a couple of stationary bike rides 1.4 kms in 15 minutes so you can see he has lost none of his speed. He is using crutches to get to and from the bathroom. As soon as the wound on his lower leg heals over he will start water assisted exercises in the hospital pool. He is hoping that after a couple of days of exercises in the pool he may be ready to go home (possibly the middle of next week.) It has been over 7 weeks since the accident so he's more than ready to get home. JAG
